The nurses on the ward were amazing, they soon got up to speed with all the dressing changes required and we started physio and occupational therapy sessions.

Within the first day or so, Sophie found the courage to do a Zoom call with her friends, this was a big deal, while she had been messaging on and off, going face to face was a big deal, especially to reveal her hair loss.  Zoom was used a lot, especially for online art lessons!

Given the extended time we had together, we decided to watch the Marvel Avenger Movies in timeline order, this was a great idea as it occupied our evenings and I started to finally understand a lot of the sub plot!  After 10 days, Emma and I were able to swap over.  I had got really used to being there for Sophie, it was really hard to step away, but I knew Emma had missed Sophie and was well rested for taking over.

We could see progress in Sophie getting better, even if she herself did not feel like much was improving.  Chemotherapy continued and the consultants were constantly balancing the treatments between the fungal infection and the leukemia.

About 10 days into February the doctors started to talk about the possibility of going home for a day and night, this was really exciting, but also made us all really nervous.  We had all got so used to the care around us, going home and being on our own was a big step.  On the 13th February Sophie came home for the night, it was quite an emotional drive from Sutton to Reigate, the apprehension quickly faded away once we got settled and soon Sophie was baking some thank you cookies for the staff on the ward to take back the following day...

After a night and day at home, there were again mixed emotions taking Sophie back to the Marsden. We knew that it would not be long before she would be discharged.  On the 16th February, only a few days later Sophie was discharged from the ward.  To be home was a great feeling, another chapter done and another step forward on the recovery road.

While we were home, Sophie still needed daily anti-fungal treatment and regular dressing changes, so we started daily visits to the Children's Daycare Unit at the Marsden.  This would be the pattern until the end of August...
