Bobby Child

Bobby is a New Yorker in love with musical theatre, he dreams of being on the stage but is forced to work in a bank by his controlling mother. He has been engaged to Irene Roth for 5 years but doesn’t want to marry her. When he goes to Deadrock to escape Irene, he meets Polly, falls instantly in love with her and decides to put on a show to pay off the mortgage on her father’s theatre. In order to receive respect, he entices the Zangler folly girls to come to Deadrock and disguises himself as Bella Zangler, the established producer. Bobby is involved in 12 songs so needs to be a strong singer, actor, tapper and ballroom dancer for his “Fred and Ginger” type numbers with Polly. Good comedy timing.

Lank Hawkins

The owner of the Deadrock Saloon. No solos but sings in many of the chorus numbers. He is an intense, usually manic fellow, blessed with a vision for the town that no one else quite shares. Lank wants to buy the Deadrock theatre from Polly’s father and has some very funny lines of dialogue. He wants Polly to marry him until Irene throws herself in his direction.

Irene Roth

A pampered and cultured society debutante and Bobby’s controlling fiancée engaged to him for 5 years. Irene follows him to Deadrock to try and take him to New York and finally accepts the fact that Bobby won’t marry her because he loves Polly. Then Irene falls madly for Lank Hawkins whom she seduces with her only song “Naughty Baby.” She needs to be a good mover and have a comic flair.

Everett Baker

Everett lives in the past and is always reminiscing about how lovely Polly’s mother was when she performed in the Gaiety Theatre, Deadrock. Owner of the Gaiety Theatre which is physically and financially crumbling. Finally, he falls instantly in love with Lottie Child when she arrives in Deadrock.

Patricia Fodor

Eugene’s English sister and fellow tourist. Very British. Also needs to be able to dance.

Mother (Ms. Lottie Child

Lottie is Bobby’s business-orientated and domineering mother who gives him an allowance. She wants him to forego his ideas of being in musical theatre and make a career in the bank. She strongly disapproves of his passion for dancing as well as his engagement to Irene. She is a very bossy and overbearing woman. She ends up with Everett Baker.

Follies Girls

Cowboys: Moose and Sam

All have small dialogue and form the Cowboy Trio who have solo pieces and sing with the male chorus. They are extremely lazy. Ideally need to be tappers and dancers to partner the follies girls.

Other Cowboys: Harry, Pete, Custus, Jimmy, Billy, Wyatt, Junior

Harry is the bartender, Billy, Wyatt and Junior are the card players. All these men have some lines of dialogue and need to be tappers and dancers to partner the follies girls. All these men involved in staged gun fights for the tourists.

Ensemble and other small roles

Stage Manager of New York theatre; Stagehands; Wardrobe mistress; 4 Zangler Show Girls; 2 Lackeys for Zangler; 3 Mother’s Directors; New York Theatre patrons; Deadrock townsfolk.

There is an opportunity for a strong ensemble to support in what will be a busy show. We are looking for talented singers, actors and dancers to join the company in the ensemble for this exciting production, who will be the street crowds for New York and Deadrock. You will be onstage at different times throughout the show.

ELOC Rehearsal Times and Venues

ELOC rehearses weekly, on Mondays (usually excluding bank holidays), Wednesdays and closer to the show on Sundays too.

  • Monday rehearsals are for the company (chorus and principals).
  • Wednesdays rehearsals are mainly for principals, and sometimes dancers/ensemble. Please refer to the rehearsal schedule to check if you are called.
  • Sunday rehearsals are for the company, and start about a month before show-week.

ELOC will issue a detailed rehearsal schedule once the show is cast. Please make sure you check the schedule regularly for updates and changes. It is also important to let the production team know of any planned absences, so they can plan the rehearsal schedule accordingly.

Monday and Wednesday rehearsals arrive at 7.50pm for a 8.00pm sharp start.

Sunday rehearsals are planned for the following dates and times:

  • Sunday 9th March - 4:00pm to 8:00pm
  • Sunday 16th March - 4:00pm to 8:00pm
  • Sunday 23rd March - 4:00pm to 8:00pm
  • Sunday 30th March - 4:00pm to 8:00pm

Technical and Dress rehearsals are as follows:

  • Sunday 6th April - Sitzprobe and Technical Rehearsal - Epsom Playhouse - 1:00pm* - 11:00pm
  • Monday 7th April - Dress Rehearsal - Epsom Playhouse - 6:00pm* - 11:00pm

* Start time may vary, more details nearer the event.

The Technical and Dress rehearsals sometimes finish late, we will do our best to finish as soon as we can, but please be prepared for this!

REHEARSAL VENUES:

  • Mondays/Sundays: The Good Shepherd Church Hall, Station Approach Road, Tadworth, Surrey, KT20 5AH
  • Wednesdays: The Vale Primary School, Langley Vale, 84-92 Beaconsfield Road, Langley Vale, Epsom, Surrey, KT18 6HP

If for any reason the rehearsal venue changes, you will be informed.

  • Sunday 17th November 9:30am to 1:00pm. The Good Shepherd Church Hall, Tadworth. Principal auditions plus dance auditions.

ELOC Membership and Show Fees

To become a performing member of ELOC you have to join to be part of our membership. There are two ways to become a performing member of the company:

  1. by successfully gaining either a principal or an ensemble part in our open auditions, or
  2. by doing a company audition in front of the ELOC Committee.

Each cast member is required to pay our combined membership and show fee, which goes towards the cost of putting on a show of this size. Adult Show Fee: £110.00 Student Show Fee: £55.00

We ask that this fee is paid no later than Friday 28th February 2025. Fees can be paid in a number of ways:

  • Via online bank transfer (please ask a committee member for the BACs details)
  • Via cheque (made payable to ELOC) or cash (please give to a committee member at a rehearsal)
  • Card payments
  • In installments (please chat to a committee member if you would like to pay in this way)
  • For further details about membership and show fees, please speak to any committee member.

Keeping Up To Date and In Touch with the Production

ELOC has a very comprehensive website that concerns all aspects of the Company. It can be found here: www.eloc.org.uk.

The production team and committee will keep in touch with rehearsal news/notes mainly by WhatsApp. The committee will use the contact details you provide to us to include you in the relevant mailing/contact groups. If you do not have access to WhatsApp, please speak to a committee member.

Audition Information

Auditions will take place on Sunday 17th November 2024, from 9:30am onwards (you will be sent your audition time-slot) at The Good Shepherd Church Hall, Tadworth.

Submitting Your Audition Form

You will be required to fill out:

  • Name and contact information
  • Parts you are auditioning for
  • Details on your availability during the rehearsal period
  • Experience with ELOC and other companies

When filling out your audition form you must be clear about any holiday commitments or any other periods of unavailability, please be honest, if you are worried about this, please discuss this with the production team ahead of your audition. Once an audition schedule has been put together, you will be emailed with your audition time-slot.

The audition results will be available to view on the ELOC Website, shortly after auditions have taken place (date to be advised). For the first 24-hours, the results will only be viewable behind a group login, allowing only The Producers audition participants to view them. You will be given a login to view the audition results at the time of auditioning. Good luck!!
