Thanks for showing an interest in joining ELOC. We have an enviable reputation as a very friendly Company and are always pleased to welcome new members, whether to perform on stage, or help backstage. For performers formal singing experience is desirable but NOT essential and it is not necessary to be able to read music. However you must be able to follow a line within a song and be able to sing in tune.
If you do decide to join what we believe to be one of the best amateur musical groups in the area I'm sure you will have great fun, make many new friends, and participate in some wonderful shows. Here are a few notes about our society and productions.
To become a "playing member" of the society you will need to do a singing audition in front of the committee (preferably a piece you know, but please remember to bring the music for the pianist.) We suggest you come to one or two rehearsals first. We usually hold the audition in the hall after rehearsals. If you wish to audition for a particular part in any show, and you are not a member, an audition fee of £5.00 will be charged. Dancers are 'auditioned' by the choreographer as required for a particular show.
We rehearse on Mondays, usually from 8.00pm until 10.00pm. Nearer the show we rehearse on some Wednesdays (with the principals), and from about a month before the show Sundays from 4.00pm until 8.00pm. We hire out librettos and scores for you to use during rehearsals (a refundable deposite is also required). You will be given a rehearsal schedule. (We usually go to the pub after each rehearsal – we're a very friendly company!)
Usually the venues are:
Chorus - Mondays at Good Shepherd Church Hall, Station Approach Road, Tadworth KT20 5AJ.
Principals -Wednesdays at Langley Vale School, Beaconsfield Road, Langley Vale KT18 6HD.
Full Company - Sundays at Good Shepherd Church Hall from about a month before the show.
Dawn's Dance Studio - Whenever you are needed, 37 Westbury Road, New Malden, KT3 5AX.
Show Costs and Members' fees
The cost of a show will typically be about £30,000, including the theatre hire, cost of the orchestra, hire of the sets and costumes, makeup, stage crew, Director, Music Director, Choreographer, insurance, royalties and lots more!
The current fees are as follows:
- Membership Fee (Paid once a year): ADULTS - £30, and STUDENTS - £15
- Show Fee (Paid per show): ADULTS - £65, and STUDENTS - £30.
Cheques to be made payable to ELOC and given to Membership Secretary Rebeca Cenamor.
You will also be asked to make a contribution towards the hire of librettos and scores, currently £10 each. A refundable deposit equal to the cost of each book you hire will also be required. This will be in the region of £25 to £30 but any cheques will only be cashed in the event your book is not returned in good condition by the end of the show.
With such high production costs we encourage the members to sell as many tickets as possible.
Show week starts on the Sunday before the show. The 'Band Call' will run some time between 2.00pm and 5.30pm. It is held in the Myers Hall, Epsom Playhouse (the room next to the bar) and we sit and sing through the songs with the orchestra. The Technical Rehearsal follows and usually starts at 6.30 - 7.00pm, with the rehearsal pianist. This is in full costume but no makeup. It is hopefully a run of the show, but it's up to the Director and Stage Crew! The Stage Manager will give a short address on stage etiquette. We usually need to be at the theatre at 6.00pm. The 'Tech' usually finishes between 10.30pm and 11.00pm but can be later if there are complicated set changes.
The Dress Rehearsal is on Monday and you will need to be at the theatre at about 6.30pm. We start the show at 7.30pm and hopefully will finish between 10.00pm and 11.00pm. This is in full costume and makeup, with the orchestra. We provide the makeup and pay for a makeup team to help those who need it (most of us can do most of the necessary and you will soon learn!) Photographs will be taken at the Dress Rehearsal. The show starts on Tuesday and continues until Saturday. We perform 6 shows – nightly at (usually) 7.30, plus a Saturday Matinee at 2.30. Always sign in on the board in the back-stage foyer (on right side of stage facing the audience, known as 'Stage Right') so the Stage Manager knows you're in. Most evenings after the show (still on the adrenalin high!) several of us will go for a meal at one of our favourite places – Pizza, Thai, Chinese, French, Italian or Indian! (Friday night is traditionally curry night!) Then there's the Last Night Party!
